The Festhalle on the BERNEXPO site, built 72 years ago as a temporary structure, has reached the end of its life cycle. The BERNEXPO GROUPE has therefore decided to replace it with a new Hall. The new building will enable the staging of cultural events, shows, sporting events, art exhibitions, musicals, television shows, meetings and other conventions with a capacity of up to 9,000 people.
In March 2021, the voters of the city of Berne said "yes" to the Mingerstrasse-Papiermühlestrasse redevelopment plan and the city's investment contribution of 15 million Swiss francs to the total cost of 95 million Swiss francs. The Grand Council of the Canton of Berne also approved a corresponding credit. Important milestones have thus been reached. According to the current planning status, construction of the New Festival Hall is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2022, with opening planned for 2024.
